Two phrases you'll hear a lot around the site are self-sustaining and community-driven. The former refers to theRequest/Fulfillment format of our site. Post anything you can possibly imagine us being able to help with; just be wary of the two main no-no's and grey areas: Free/Cheap Work and Academic Dishonesty.
Some helpful tips on starting queries:
Get your thread stickied: Further down this post you can see a couple of ways you can get your thread stickied in The Forum. Getting stickied will get more eyes on your request, which will make your query more likely to be fulfilled, get it answered more quickly and improve the quality of the fulfillment.
Categorize your thread: In order to get eyes that are most interested and most talented in the areas you're requesting help, it may help to categorize the request. For example, "Grammar" is the categorization for this thread: Grammar: What's the difference between "ie" and "eg"?. Other examples of potential categories includes Photoshop, Research, Tech/Software Help, Advice, Proofreading, etc.
Place tags on your thread: It is also very helpful for searching the site if you use the "Tags" option. Having threads tagged makes people hate life a lot less when they're searching for specifc guidance, will tend to make threads less repetitive and even helps people doing a cold search on Google to come across your thread. So, yeah, it just makes the site way better if things are tagged, categorized and organized.
Mark Off-Topic Threads As "OT": If you just feel like screwing around, you're certainly welcome to post about anything and everything. Just be sure to put "OT" at the beginning of a thread title for any topic that is not a Query/Request.
Getting Stickied
There are two ways to get your query stickied. The first is to be a Very Important Poster (VIP). Information on how to acheive this, and the other rewards you receive for acheiving VIP status is laid out here: VIP Rewards and Requirements.
The other way is to offer cash compensation for fulfilling your query/request. Not just any thread with any cash compensation will be stickied, though. The rule of thumb is that the cash compensation must be at least $1, and the rate must be at least $10/hr. That is, if you have a very simple request that could not possibly ever take more than 5 minutes to do and you offer a cash comp of $1, it may qualify to be stickied. If you have a difficult request that may only take an hour but there's a good chance it'll take as many as 3 hours, and you offer a cash comp of $10, it will not be eligible to be stickied. Rounding up is encouraged. Also, the $10/hr rate is the floor for being stickied. Remember one of the golden rules here at procrastinaters.com:Free/Cheap Work.
Finally, we, the moderators and administrators of the site, have the final say on what gets stickied. The above is just general guidelines; not just any thread that follows the guidelines will necessarily be deemed worthy of being stickied.
Assists and Nominations
Since the original poster (OP) has the sole vote for who was most helpful in answering a query, it is important to help your fellow poster out by letting a moderator know who was kind enough to take time out of their day to help you. You get a mentionable amount of points toward VIP status for "Assists"--that is, private messaging (PMing) the appropriate moderator with a link to the thread and the username of the helpful gentlemen.
Similarly you get a very sizable amount of points for getting an "Assist" on a Post of the Month, Savior of the Month, etc. So whenever a post makes you laugh out loud, a query fulfillment saves you from ruination, etc, be sure to send a PM with a link to the post and the username of the poster you're nominating.
