The Community-Driven Effort
Permalink

One of the buzz phrase used around here is community-driven.  We strive to have everything from the site's logo right down to surviva's Blog be as "of-the-community, by-the-community and for-the-community" as our feable, little human brains can imagine.

Contests are constantly held to determine the look, feel, mechanics and direction of the website.  When possible, we opt not employ graphic designers or think tanks or any of the like.  This is so that the community itself can select the site's destiny and so that the community itself can reap the financial (and otherwise) benefits of doing so.

The Suggestion Box is always open for posting, the posts are constantly read, the ideas are sought to be implemented as creatively as conceivable, and rewards are to be given out as liberally as we see fit to those who post in there.

surviva's Blog dedicates the first week of every month to community content--that is, community music picks, posts of the month, query fulfillments of the month, etc.  Also, two months out of this year have already been put aside with the ideal that those months will be completely community-driven.  (The plan is for December to be Runners-Up-of-the-Year-themed, and there's a plan for a VIP month where 4 VIPs are selected to run the blog for each of the 4 weeks of the month).

As a final, tiny example, we've gone against recommendation to allow any user to use tags on topics.  We trust in our community and believe that ticking all the options like this we can think of will on the whole lead to more good than bad.  I'm sure we missed some, so let us know of any "community parenting" features we've accidentally left on.

All of these words just to get into the examples.  We seek to constantly be coming up with new ideas for making this site community-driven, and in fitting fashion, we look forward to hearing your ideas for how to do so.
