About This Site: Is it possible to have .GIFs for an avatar?

Okay, so I know it seems beyond stupid for me to have to ask a question about a site of which I am an administrator, but here it is anyway:

So I tried to change my avatar to a .GIF, and it wasn't working out so hot.  However, I've also tried on other sites that I know for certain members can have .GIFs on, and I couldn't figure it out there either, so it might just be that I'm dumb.

In the administration panel, there are options for avatars (size, who can and can't set them, etc.), but there's nothing that has anything to do with file type.

Can anyone tell me: A) if it's possible, how to do it or B) if it's not possible, then tell me definitively that it's not possible so I can stop trying.

My first attempts were also failures. I did find out that gifs used as avatars can't be any bigger than 100x100 (at least on some sites) so try resizing. Didn't work for me tho.

I don't no how safe this was but I went to a free gifs site, clicked on the image and then save as. Then uploaded via upload a file. So anyway, it's possilbe.
